Nick Hempton is an alto and tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader producing new music in the modern/mainstream tradition. Calling New York home since 2004, he headlines clubs throughout the city, as well as concert halls and festivals around the world. Influenced by the greats of the instrument like Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley, etc, and informed by a youth misspent playing R&B and ska in his native Australia, Hempton’s jazz is original, approachable, and always swinging.

In demand as a sideman as well as a leader, Nick has performed with some of the top names in Jazz and popular music and has been featured on dozens of albums encompassing the full range of popular music styles. He has made numerous television and radio appearances, and has also developed an excellent reputation as a music educator, holding private lessons and masterclasses for school and mature-age students.

The Nick Hempton Band was formed in 2005. As a group, they have played most of the major New York venues, and toured both regionally and internationally. Many years of collaboration have made the group a sharp, cohesive unit, and 2015 sees the release of their fourth studio album, Catch And Release.

Benny Oyama is a singer, guitarist, bandleader, multi-instrumentalist and troubadour from New York City and based in the vibrant Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn.  His unique blend of Brazilian, jazz, and rock-inflected music emerges from being present to what is presented in his experience – surprising cultural pathways, the wonders of nature, the trauma of the past, and the complexity of meeting the world with mixed identities – all infused with rich melodies, harmony and rhythm.

Benny’s mother is Jewish, and his father is Japanese-American and was born and grew up in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan following the imprisonment of his parents, also American citizens of Japanese descent, in an internment camp in Jerome, Arkansas.

Benny has recorded three albums of original material, and has performed around New York City, China, Japan, Brazil, Israel and the US.  In 2007, Benny performed for Bastille day celebrations as a guest of the French Consulate, and for private engagements by the Portuguese Embassy in Beijing, China.  In the summer of 2012, Benny participated in the festive bênção celebrations in Salvador da Bahia while studying capoeira movement and music under master João Pequeno.

He currently holds the weekly thursday night residency at Injera NYC, the best-kept secret (shh!) for live music in the West Village.

Benny is greatly influenced by Zen buddhist philosophy and practice, Advaita Vedanta, the writings of Krishnamurti, yoga, and capoeira.

    QUOTES

“I think you will find that “Sparks” will light the artistic fires of the soul and intellect.” Heartfully, YUSEF LATEEF

“New York’s Apicella is a big time soloist an comping artist and his strengths shine on his latest.

His playing behind Sonny Fortune’s soloing on “Lookin’ East” is a joy to hear.”

“As a player, Apicella immediately brings to mind Grant Green. He’s funky, he’s bluesy, and he’s not afraid to get dirty at times…Apicella and band have that perfect jazz rapport that allows them to be tight as hell and play off each other beautifully.” JOHN HEIDT, Vintage Guitar Magazine

“Apicella’s playing shines…[he] is aware of the straight-ahead tradition, showcasing his Wes Montgomery influence…Apicella’s guitar sound is bright and clean, and easily cuts through the huge sound of the organ.” TIM FISCHER, Just Jazz Guitar Magazine

“Apicella is a lithe, swinging guitarist with an affinity for the contrasting styles of both Grant Green and Wes Montgomery…An all-around impressive debut by a guitarist of substance.” MARK GARDNER, Jazz Journal
